ADOT Rest Areas - List of Open/Closed Areas

Postby danjmcs » Tue Oct 27, 2009 8:10 pm

Due to budget cuts, ADOT has closed 13 more rest areas. For those of us that "Motor" around the state a lot, it's definitely nice to know which ones are open and where.

Below is a link to the ADOT website that has a nice map of the state showing the location of all the facilities and which ones are open, closed, and not ADOT maintained.

AZCentral article about the 13 closures.

Unfortunately one of those closed rest areas is one of our favorite stops, Salt River Canyon. :(

Basically of the most common North/South routes from Phoenix, I-17, AZ87 and AZ60 to AZ89, the only rest area shown as being open is Sunset Point on I-17. The Sacaton stop between Phoenix & Casa Grande, on the way to/from Tucson is also now shown as closed.

The Rest Area heading east out 60 by Superior is a non-ADOT facility and is listed as open.

Only 1 of the three Rest Areas on I-10 going West is now open, that being the closest to Phoenix @ Burnt Well. The two rest areas near Blythe and Quartzsite are now both closed.

According to the website these closures will be re-evaluated next June.

I was surprised to see the rest area at the bottom of the Salt River Canyon on 60 closed when I went to Show Low a couple of weeks ago.

That one really is a SAFETY stop and I thought should not have been closed!

Agreed Barney, I was surprised too.

Was the lot still open and accessible to park, just no services? It's such a nice walk down to the river it would be a shame to lose the whole stop.

there was about enough room to park one tractor trailer rig. They had the parking area blocked off, but there was an extra wide shoulder area left.

Damn, that sucks... its a real mess with so many services...

ADOT: 15% cut would decimate services, staff - Under scenario, 2,400 would lose jobs, projects would halt

Some of the rest areas now set to re-open.

Unfortunately the Salt River Canyon rest area isn't one of them, yet. They say more are on tap to re-open in the fall.
